The capsule wardrobe is the goal for environmentally conscious fashionistas and minimalists alike.
It’s characterized by using as few pieces as possible to create a versatile wardrobe that lasts for years and fulfills all your sartorial goals. Your needs depend on your lifestyle – a remote worker will have different requirements than a jet-setting businesswoman transitioning from the boardroom to industry events. Its popularity reflects a cultural shift away from fast fashion, but it’s more challenging than it seems. It takes time, money, and self-awareness. No one has the capital to overhaul their wardrobe all at once. We need time to detach from incessant advertising and discover where personal style and what flatters us overlap. I’m still building mine, but here are my top pieces of advice for starting your capsule wardrobe.
1. FIND YOUR LIFELONG AESTHETIC
This may seem obvious, but it’s crucial. A capsule wardrobe isn’t about mimicking your favorite #minimalist blogger or a Pinterest mood board. It’s about deeper self-discovery. It involves finding pieces that make you feel amazing, tempting you to wear them two days in a row. It’s a wardrobe filled with your favorite pieces, and to achieve that, you need to understand your preferences and identity.
2. AVOID TRENDY PIECES – UNLESS YOU LOVE THEM
If you genuinely love trendy styles and see yourself wearing them for years, include them in your wardrobe. Your capsule wardrobe doesn’t need to be all black or classic pieces if you’re eccentric at heart. If you adore harnesses or creeper shoes, they belong in your wardrobe. The key is to find clothes that express your personality instead of defining yourself by your clothes. We’ve all imagined an ideal version of ourselves or tried to emulate someone we admire, only to feel uncomfortable in the new style. Think about who you are and what you’ll like five years from now.
3. FIGURE OUT YOUR NEEDS
Consider what you wear in a week. As a freelance writer, blogger, entrepreneur, and graduate student, I have flexible wardrobe needs now, but after graduation, I’ll work in politics. I need clothes for the office, meetings, events, nightlife, lounging, and exercise. This includes business-appropriate tops, trousers, dresses, blazers, and accessories. The goal of a capsule wardrobe is to fulfill your needs with minimal pieces, not to limit yourself. People often miss the point of minimalism, sacrificing beloved graphic tees for plain white ones and becoming unhappy. The key is to balance practicality with personal style.
4. DEVELOP A "UNIFORM" FOR WORK
Having a work uniform simplifies your mornings. Two trousers and one or two skirts, combined with different tops, can create numerous outfit combinations. With three bottoms and five tops, you get 15 outfits—three weeks’ worth of options. Stick to a consistent color scheme so each top pairs with each bottom, and accessories can be mixed and matched. A few well-made, flattering pieces can help you look great and feel confident with minimal effort.
5. SEPARATES ARE YOUR FRIENDS
While dresses are convenient as they are an entire outfit in one piece, separates offer more versatility in maximizing your wardrobe. Basic bottoms can be dressed up or down with different tops, and it’s easier to repeat jeans than the same shirt.
6. RESEARCH AND WAIT
Now that you know your style and what pieces you need, it’s time to shop. Look for well-made pieces from brands that treat their workers well and use sustainable practices. This can be expensive, but the essence of a capsule wardrobe is to buy one high-quality item rather than several sub-par ones. This takes time, so use resources from well-researched blogs and eco-publications to find brands that meet your standards. Patience is key; sometimes, it takes months to find the perfect fit for specific items like jeans or boots.
